what is phishing and how not to fall for scammers

A CASE STORY

"I've been looking for my dream TV for months, but I've always been put off by the price. Then I found an online shop where the TV was a third of the price! I bought it on the spot. But not only did the TV never arrive, almost 40,000 CZK suddenly disappeared from my bank account. I strongly suggest you be careful when shopping online, you never know who´s on the other side."

Fishing or Phishing

Phishing is an online attack through which unknown criminals can cause you considerable financial damage. Often they use the Packeta logo, fake websites, or fraudulent email addresses that misuse the company name. We want to protect you from phishing attacks, so here is an overview of the most common tactics used by scammers. Keep your finances safe!

VERIFYING THE CREDIBILITY OF THE SITE

GUIDE: How not to fall for scammers

The holy duo: padlock + https

As you type in the address bar or open a web page, make sure it contains these two important parameters:

The padlock icon in the link box: this is one of the signs that tells us the site is secure.

https:// with the letter S at the end: the "S" is the primary acronym for the word SECURE. Therefore, run away quickly from http://, where the letter S (=security) is missing.

Tip: If you don't see "S" in the address bar, try double-clicking on it. A window will pop up telling you whether the site is secure or not.

Valid SSL certificate

It sounds complicated, but it's not. An SSL certificate is another element of web security. How can you tell that the website you are visiting has one?

You can view the certificate by clicking on the padlock symbol in the address bar and then clicking on the "View Certificate" button.

In the window that pops up, you will see the validity of the certificate and information about who issued it and for whom.

A trustworthy publisher

And we're almost at the end of our security research mission! The last step is to check the certificate issuer.

If you see for example "John Black" as the issuer of the certificate, a red light should start flashing in your head suggesting that something is wrong here, and you shouldn´t trust the website.

If you receive a fake payment request resembling one from a mail order company, always make sure you see zasilkovna.cz, packeta.com or one of our entitiesSK, HU, DE, RO, PLin the address bar (if you are sending or expecting a parcel from abroad) because we do not use any other domains.
